Are you brand new to cookie decorating? Or have you tried it a bit on your own, but you haven’t had the best luck getting your cookies to look like the gorgeous ones you see all over Pinterest and Instagram?
First of all, it takes a lot of practice to get your cookies looking pro, but don’t worry! I’m here to give you the resources I wish I had available to me when I first started out. I want to help set you up for success.
It took me a LOT of time, money, and even some frustration to get good at it. It was well worth the effort, but I feel like I had to figure most of it out on my own.
Whether you want to take up a new hobby, start your own cookie business, or just want to impress your friends and family by making amazing cookies for celebrations, the learning process is pretty much the same.
- You need to know what tools and supplies work best without all the trial and error.
- You need to learn how to make a good shortbread cookie and how to get the right royal icing consistency.
- You need to learn the right techniques when it comes to outlining, flooding, and detailing.
I have taught hundreds of beginner cookie decorators all of that and more. Some want a new hobby, some want to start a business, some want to make cookies for family events, and some just want to do a fun activity with their friends on a weekend afternoon.
Either way, here is what I recommend if you are interested in learning how to decorate cookies.
If you are in Southern California
Attend one or more of my in-person group cookie decorating classes. I bake the cookies, I make the icing, and I provide everything you need so you can just show up and try this whole cookie decorating thing to see if it’s for you.
You’ll get my supply list, recipes, step-by-step guide, learn a ton, have a great time, and leave with cookies to show off. Oh, and I feed you snacks and offer mimosas for adults, too!
If you are not local
If you can’t make it to an in-person class, or even if you do come to my classes and just want to know all the things, check out my Online Cookie Decorating Masterclass.
I break down all of the fundamentals including how to make the perfect shortbread cookie, how to finally master royal icing, and all the basics of cookie decorating plus much more.
You also get my complete supply list, my recipes, tons of FAQs to help troubleshoot just about any issues, and you can ask questions if you happen to still have any.
You save $$$ when you buy the complete Masterclass vs. individual video modules. You can purchase it here.

So, if you want to decorate cookies at home you’re going to need the right tools and supplies. This is key.
I have a Cookie Decorating Starter Kit available that includes everything you need to decorate cookies at home, except you know, eggs, butter, flour, etc.
It’s all of the professional grade tools and supplies I personally use. I wish I had had something like this when I first started out, it would have saved me a ton of time and money.
All of the included products would add up to nearly $150 if bought from Amazon or other retailers. I sell my starter kit for $100 which saves you money and time. You can purchase it here.

One last thing
Here is the ultimate secret to getting good at decorating cookies: practice, practice, practice. Seriously, though, it took me decorating thousands of cookies for customers over the years to get to where I am today, so keep practicing.
And most importantly, have fun!
